While brand name ‘Kaoka’ might be translated as ‘whatever happens’ in Ivorian-native Guéré, creative director Adeline Tyeoulou-Dyela is firmly taking her creative future, and that of her home country, into her own hands. A commercial engineer with over 25 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, she shifted gears to pursue a passion for fashion. The result is Kaoka; a mens, women and children’s clothing and accessories brand that highlights the richness of African culture. Everything from the brand’s fabric choices, Batik and Bogolan, to the logo and pattern drawn on the fabrics - inspired by the figures drawn with kaolin clay on women’s faces in the country's Wé region - are representative of her heritage. The Mandjou dress is the brand’s best seller and its easy to see why. Like the rest of the brand’s read-to-wear collection, it comes with a comfortably modern brand signature but also an authentic celebration of heritage that’s a joy to behold.
